Detection of Visceral adiposity by Ultrasonography and its relation to insulin resistance in HCV patients

Abstract

Background:HepatitisCisamajorcauseofliver-relatedmorbidityandmortalityandrepresentsa majorpublichealthprobleminEgyptandworldwide.Ultrasonographyisasimplenon-invasive methodfordetectionofvisceralfat,whichisdirectly,correlatedwithinsulinresistance(IR)aswellas developmentoftype2diabetesmellitus.
Aim:ToassessthevalidityofdetectionofvisceraladiposetissueareawithUltrasonographyandits correlationwithIRinHCVpatients
Materials&Method:Thestudyparticipantsweresubcategorizedintotwogroups,Group(I): included867healthysubjectswithnegative(HCV)RNAasacontrolgroup.Group(II):included277 patientswithchronicHCVasastudygroup.The2groupsweresubjectedtothoroughhistorytaking, fullclinicalexamination,Anthropometricstudy,ultrasonographicexaminationandlaboratory investigationsincludingliverfunctions,viralmarkers,andqualitativePCRforHCVRNA,lipid profile&glucoseprofile.
Results:Thisstudyrevealedthatultrasonographyisasimple,non-invasive,safemethodindetection ofvisceraladiposity,whichiscorrelatedsignificantlywithIRinchronicHCVpatients.
