Knowledge and Self-Care Management Practice Among Asthmatic Children (6-12 Years): An Educational Intervention Study

Abstract
Background: Asthma is a highly prevalent chronic respiratory disease which has been increasing worldwide. Education to support self-management is an integral part of asthma care that improves disease control, reduces exacerbations and admissions, and improves quality of life of asthmatic children and their caregivers. Objective: The aim of the current work was to assess factors affecting knowledge and self-care management practice of asthmatics and their care givers and to evaluate the effect of implementing an asthma educational intervention. Patients and Method: An interventional study (pre and post comparison study design) was conducted that compared the change in knowledge and self-care practices among participants before and after implementing a health educational program. Results: Asthma educational intervention significantly increased asthma symptoms control and pediatric asthma quality of life among studied asthmatic children, asthma knowledge and pediatric asthma caregivers quality of life among caregivers of the studied asthmatic children after the application of the educational program (P<0.001). Conclusions: It is postulated that children with asthma who receive an interactive, comprehensive educational program would improve their quality of life, asthma management and asthma control compared with children receiving usual care.
